I seek the support of each one of you in this difficult times: Gamlin

ITANAGAR, May 7: In his first official statement after taking office on Thursday, the Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin has appealed the citizens to work together and stand united. In an emotional message, the Chief Minister said that “I have taken office at a very difficult time. This is a time for prayer, for solace and for re-affirming our commitment to the state we call home. I seek the support of each one of you in this”.

“The passing away of our beloved Chief Minister late Dorjee Khandu is perhaps one of the darkest moments in our state’s history. At this difficult and tragic time, I appeal to the people of Arunachal to stand united and to work together to take his dream forward. I feel that only when we can continue, and indeed accelerate the tremendous pace of development that he has set in motion, that we will truly pay tribute to his memory, he said.

Arunachal Pradesh has lost definitely one of its most illustrious and compassionate leaders. His absence is a void that will be hard to fill. Khandu was a visionary driven with a passion and a commitment to take our state to un-imaginable heights of progress. But at the same time, he was also a very kind and warm-hearted human being. I can only remember and pay tribute to the many small gestures he made that touched the lives of thousands of people across the state. Even in the central government, he is much remembered today for his affable manner and his immense humbleness, the CM said. As I travel to Tawang tomorrow for the last rites, I will carry with me the love and affection of the entire state towards it’s ‘people’s CM’.

“I have assumed the office of the Chief Minster with utmost humility and as a tribute to late Dorjee Khandu. I have no doubt in my mind that this is an extension of his vision and that my foremost responsibility is to carry forward his dream of making Arunachal and its people prosperous, self-reliant and happy’” he added.

The Chief Minister further thanked the entire Congress Legislature Party for reposing their faith in him. “I know for certain that it is only as a team that we will together make this into a reality” he said.

Prolonged Dusk

Tom Simai

Last summer, Namchik Valley Society For Eco Tourism and Wildlife Conservation was conferred the opportunity by Butterfly India Group (BIG), Mumbai to organize the 13th Butterfly India Meet 2010 in Namdapha in Changlang District for the second time. The initial version was organized in Jairampur in 2006 by the same NGO, gaining accolades from worldwide.

Therefore, the consent of BIG to organize it for second time in the state was a huge accomplishment as it would help to improvise the image of the district and reflect the opulent ecology of our state, globally. Most significantly it would also list the butterfly species fluttering across this tropical vegetation.

When the meet concluded after 5 days of rigorous trekking, chasing and clicking the butterflies, in all 185 species of butterflies were listed, this was sort of a record.

And to organize this very significant meet, being the secretary of the society, I knocked the doors of all the Tirap and Changlang MLAs but they had their own problems to share.

Such lackadaisical and irresponsible responses from our local representatives compelled me to approach our Late Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu instead of pursing the visionless throng.

And I'm glad that I did because it offered me the opportunity to meet and interact with him for the first time after he took oath as CM. Though it was for a brief moment, the memories will linger for a while.

The concept of Butterfly India Meet was a bit perplexing for him initially. But when I briefed him about the reason of organizing it and the benefits the state will incur, without a second thought, he sanctioned the fund required for the event that later on became the most successful event of that summer with active participation of global nature and butterfly aficionados.

I vividly recall our last conversation. That heartfelt smile, that cordial greeting and that firm handshake is still afresh, like yesterday. It was this simplicity that separated him from the power hungry hordes and it was this simplicity that connected him with the general public so perfectly that I’m skeptical if anyone will ever replace the void created by his untimely death.

Considering the developmental initiatives and implementation across the state, without hesitation, I take this liberty to say that he was the most successful CM of our time with progressive visions for the state. Due to this reason, he garnered support from all walks of life.

No matter how much we might have criticized his policies but we cannot deny this verity also that it was during his time, we witnessed development taking shape in the state and scaling the height of progress.

From stagnant to resurging economy, the transformation has been magnificent and visible. It’s sad that the man who gave us reasons to dream and hope in time of adversity will not be here to witness the harvest of his sowing.

With that tragic Saturday crash, a prolific era of contemporary Arunachal has ceased forever. The rays of hope that enlightened our path are suddenly engulfed by darkness.

Now he is gone and with him that heartfelt smile and hope is also gone. Life will never be same again on this land of dawn lit mountains because when we thought the desperate dusk was over, tragedy struck to tell us that the dusk has been prolonged. Tomorrow that seemed so close is now unseen and unknown. (simaitom@gmail.com)
